The Basilisks lizard is found in Central and South American rainforests near rivers and streams. They are about 2 to 2.5ft. head to tail. Basilisks get there name from the Greek word basilískos meaning “little king”. Basilisks are omnivores, their diet consist of plant material, insects, fruit, and small vertebrates. These AMAZING lizards are EXCELLENT swimmers and are capable of remaining underwater for up to 30 minutes. The reason why this lizard is called the Jesus Christ Lizard is because it can run on water!! Basilisks can run across the water on their hind legs at a speed of 5 feet per second, for a distance of about 15 feet before they sink into the water and swim. Your probably asking how they can do this, they have long toes with fringes of skin that spread out in the water increasing surface area. As they rapidly move their legs, they slap their feet against the water creating tiny air pockets that keep them from sinking. Make sure to watch the video of these interesting creatures below.
